The Zuni indians live in a village in New Mexico approximately thirty-five miles south of Gallup. Their reservation encompasses 409,182 acres and the population of tribal membership is 8,084. Of this number approximately sixty-five percent of the tribal members, or 5,250, are involved in handcrafting jewelry.
Zuni artists are world-renowned for their channel inlay patterns, fetish necklaces, cluster , needlepoint (pointed on both ends) and petit point (pointed only on one end) designs. They use stones, such as turquoise and pipestone, and incorporate silver, jet, lapis lazuli, malachite and shells brought by traders. Some of the more widely used and exotic shells include mother-of-pearl, white clam, green snail, melon and pink shell. Their jewelry is meticulously crafted and their choice of colors in uniting stones and shells is remarkable in its correctness.
