Hopi Jewelry Catalog
The Hopis regard themselves as the first inhabitants of America. Their village of Oraibi is indisputably the oldest continiuously occupied settlement in the United States. It and most of the other villages cling to six-hundred-foot-high escarpments of three rocky mesas rising abruptly out of the desert plain. No part of the vast arid is more in-hospitable than the Hopi reservation of 561,054 acres and a population of 5916, itself completely surrounded by the Navajo reservation. The Hopi Indians have developed a unique style of jewelry making. The designs and concepts are part and parcel of the Hopi religion, life and ceremonies. Many of the designs depict water in its various forms. Since the land of the Hopi is arid, there is a focus on water needed for their crops and for drinking. Their jewelry is called overlay and is quite distinctive. It is made by cutting a design of one piece of silver and soldering it onto a plain sheet of silver. The design is then oxidized with liver of sulfate to produce beautiful shadows and shading. The distinctivness of the Hopi jewelry is well-known among the wearers of Indian jewelry and it has no peer in its uniqueness, simplicity and elegance.
