The Navajos refer to themselves as Dine, which means the people. They are the largest Native American tribe in the United States, consisting of more than 200,000 members. Their reservation encompasses sixteen million acres in Arizona, New Mexico, Utah and surrounds the Hopi reservation.
One of the hallmarks of Navajo jewelry is the extensive use of turquoise. The scared stone of all Native American people of the Southwest, turquoise has a spiritual healing significance. It is said to keep the person who is wearing it from harm. Turquoise comes in many shades of blue and greens and has a hardness of 5-6 in the Mohs scale of hardness used in mineralogy.
In the 1920's and 1930's very large and heavy turquoise stones were used in jewelry, which made it more valuable when it was placed in pawn. Pawn is part of the culture of the Navajos. They would rather put their wealth into jewelry than money, for the item can be pawned over and over again.
Most Navajo jewelry is still made in the traditional and classic way. However, some artists are changing styles, forging new ideas and techniques, using inlay of precious and semiprecious stones, channel work, mosaic inlay and inlay. In addition, the sophisticated use of gold and diamonds has transformed jewelry making from craft to art.
